The 2018 Global Council held 4-7 February in Panama City, Panama held true to its promise to offer a platform for IIA Affiliate leaders from around the world to contribute insights that help shape the future of our global organization and profession, network with their peers, and exchange leading practices for Affiliate growth and sustainability.

The Program

The IIA’s Global Chairman of the Board Mike Peppers presided over Global Council meetings held at the Hilton Panama which started with a roll call of Affiliates in attendance, followed by a warm welcome to Panama City by IIA–Panama’s chairman Omar Moreno.

Breakout Discussion Sessions, facilitated by members of The IIA’s Executive Committee and IIA Global Headquarters staff, were focused on gathering input and feedback on key topics such as the Global Strategic Plan, Conformance with the Standards, and the Global Certification Strategy.

Several past IIA board chairs were present to share the latest on key global strategic initiatives such as the vision for Global Council when it transitions to Global Assembly and new guidelines designed to support Affiliates when working with local regulators and legislators on legislation that impacts internal auditing. The IIA’s CEO and President Richard Chambers presented The IIA’s Global Footprint and discussed the imperatives for internal auditors in 2018 and beyond.

Networking and exchange opportunities started with an ice-breaking game held at the Welcome Reception and continued throughout the event with two engaging Knowledge Exchange Sessions: a Speed Networking session that gave Affiliates ample opportunities to interact one-on-one, and an IIA Trade Show where delegates met key Global Headquarters staff to learn about IIA products and services available to their Affiliate and members.

Prior to Global Council, more than 35 delegates from among smaller and emerging Affiliates participated in an optional half-day Affiliate Management Workshop where they learned how to assess their Affiliate’s maturity level and create a plan for growth and sustainability, develop a local advocacy strategy to captivate stakeholders, and how to effectively use social media to connect with stakeholders and members.

The lively cultural evening and dinner hosted by IIA–Panama at the waterfront Club Union was filled with fireworks – literally – and featured a spectacular performance of traditional Panamanian dancers. To end the event, participants visited the Panama Canal and Casco Viejo, Panama City’s historic old quarter.

Global Council Report

The detailed notes taken during the Breakout Discussion Sessions are being reviewed to prepare the final Global Council report that will be sent to all participants and Affiliates in late March.
