The IIA’s annual Global Council brings together IIA leaders from around the world to contribute insights that help shape the future of our global organization and profession, learn about key global initiatives, and share knowledge and ideas with each other. Global Council 2017, hosted by The IIA and IIA–Italy in Rome, Italy, from 19–22 February, was a great success with representatives from 80 Affiliates, Executive Committee members, and staff for a total of nearly 160 participants and 50 guests.

The IIA’s 2016–17 Global Chairman of the Board Angela Witzany chaired the Global Council event that started with a roll call of all participating Affiliates, followed by a warm welcome to Rome by IIA–Italy’s chairman Maurizio Bonzi and an inspiring address by the Auditor General of the Vatican City state, Libero Milone.

Discussion sessions facilitated by members of The IIA’s Global Executive Committee and IIA Global Headquarters staff were focused on gathering input and feedback on key topics such as the Global Strategic Plan and Responding to the Voice of Internal Audit Stakeholders. Delegates also engaged in several Knowledge Exchange Sessions where they jointly identified solutions and exchanged ideas to better manage their operations and serve their members.

Several past IIA board chairs were present to share the latest on key global strategic initiatives such as Global Governance, Licensing the Profession, and the Global Advocacy Platform. The IIA’s CEO and President Richard Chambers presented insights on the State of the Global Profession in 2017 and the critical role that Affiliates play.

More than 20 delegates from among smaller and emerging Affiliates participated in an optional half-day Institute Management Workshop held prior to Global Council. Throughout the event, there were numerous opportunities for delegates to network while enjoying the local sites and culture. These social events included the Welcome Reception hosted by The IIA at the Rome Cavalieri hotel overlooking the city; the fabulous reception and gala dinner hosted by IIA–Italy at the sumptuous Castello di Tor Crescenza; and the optional tours organized following Global Council for all participants and their guests to the Vatican, Coliseum, and city center. During the event, veteran IIA leader Gianni Grossi from IIA–Italy was honored for his long-term service to The IIA and the profession.
