Chairman Paul Sobel, Guest Speaker at IIA Australia Hosted SOPAC
IIA Chairman of the Board Paul Sobel, CIA, CRMA, was invited as a guest speaker at South Pacific and Asia Conference (SOPAC®), hosted by IIA Australia in Melbourne from 23-25 March. The conference, themed Continuing the Conversation, enjoyed by more than 700 delegates focused on emerging issues for the internal audit profession including fraud, risk management, and governance.
Sobel also spoke to audit committee members and CAEs at The Audit & Risk Committee Forum and met with Professor Mervyn King and the heads of audit from different public sector ministries: Geoff Brown, Ministry of Defense; Greg Hollyman, Taxation; Allan Gaukroger, Social Services. During this meeting, Professor King provided insightful information about how integrated reporting is being piloted in the public sector.
In addition, Sobel spoke with a group of more than 20 CAEs on advocacy and audit committees. Good ideas were shared during this discussion with Sobel encouraging them to aggressively pursue executing several of those ideas and follow up by sharing their success stories with The IIA.
IIA Australia continues to be very active and engaged. As observed by Sobel, “The board members are progressive in advocacy and supporting the internal audit profession.” Subsequent to the conference, IIA Australia issued a press release regarding new ASX internal audit guidelines to bolster shareholder value. As a foundation member of the ASX Corporate Governance Council, IIA Australia was instrumental in drafting the principles, and remains in a great position to leverage this achievement in their advocacy efforts.
