Hellenic Institute of Internal Auditors Puts Internal Audit in the Spotlight for 2014 Conference

Last month, nearly 450 delegates attended the second annual conference of the Hellenic Institute of Internal Auditors (HIIA) in Athens, Greece. Themed “Internal Audit in the Spotlight,” speakers shared presentations on a wide range of topics appealing to staff auditors up to executive management and audit committee members.

The conference began with a welcome video featuring IIA President and CEO Richard Chambers who commended HIIA for being awarded The IIA’s 2014 Building Awareness Champion for outstanding advocacy initiatives as well as other accomplishments.

Chambers’ video was followed by a discussion on executive management’s views on the internal audit function emphasizing the need for their contribution to the reduction of bureaucracy, operational costs, and indirectly to revenue generation.

A plenary session focused on challenges faced by audit committees followed, reviewing the scaling of expectations according to their organization’s maturity level, from simple assurance of activities up to value adding and trusted advisory services provision.

A panel discussion of chief audit executives (CAEs), in which they shared their concerns on changes not only taking place in the workplace but in the country, was well attended. The conference closed with a session for auditors in the public sector on creating internal audit activities that are in accordance with international best practices.

Keynote speaker Alexandros Tourkolias, CEO of the National Bank of Greece, addressed the topic of how Greek banks have worked to develop sophisticated internal control systems continuously adjusting to new requirements, indirectly contributing to their sustainability as evidenced by recent EU stress tests. He noted that the internal audit function at his own organization played an important role in the bank’s decision making compass.
