University at Buffalo Grad Student Honored

Esther R. Sawyer Award recognizes exceptional writing

SYDNEY (27 July 2017) — Kyle Januszkiewicz, a graduate student at the University at Buffalo – The State University of New York, received the Esther R. Sawyer Award for exceptional writing. The award was presented during The Institute of Internal Auditors’ (IIA) International Conference.

The award was established to honor the memory of the late wife of Larry Sawyer, author of The Practice of Modern Internal Auditing, and recognizes the best original student manuscript on a topic related to modern internal auditing. Submissions must be written by students from an Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP) school.

Januszkiewicz received the award for his essay, “The Roles and Future of Internal Audit in Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC).” The award includes a $5,000 prize and a donation of $3,000 from The IIA’s Internal Audit Foundation.

The second-place award went to Andrew John Hagen and third place was awarded to Wanyin Yan. Hagen is an incoming Process and Controls Staff Member for EY's Financial Services Office (FSO) in Denver, Colorado. He is a 2017 graduate of the Flores MBA program at Louisiana State University with a focus in internal auditing and nonprofit management. Yan received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 2016 and a Master of Science degree in accounting in 2017 from the University at Buffalo.

IAEP is a formal program based on a curriculum for the education and training of internal audit students, within an undergraduate or post-graduate degree program. Over the past 10 years, the Internal Audit Foundation’s academic fund has awarded more than $1.5 million in grants to IAEP universities worldwide.
