Certification FAQ

Qualification in Internal Audit Leadership (QIAL) Eligibility Requirements

Candidates in the QIAL program agree to accept the conditions of the program, including eligibility requirements, exam confidentiality, Code of Ethics, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD), along with other conditions enacted by The IIA's Professional Certification Board (PCB).

QIAL candidates must meet eligibility requirements for character reference, work experience, and identification. Before a candidate’s application can be approved, ALL documentation (proof of education, character reference, experience verification, and identification) must be received and approved by The IIA’s Global Certifications staff.

Which Pathway is the Right One for Me?

Aspiring Leader and New Leader

Aspiring Leaders and New Leaders can pursue the QIAL by:

  • Completing three case studies.
  • Making a presentation to a panel.
  • Having a panel interview.

(This is referred to as Program Pathway 1.)

Experienced Leader

Experienced Leaders and Experienced Instructors can pursue the QIAL by:

  • Submitting a Portfolio of Professional Experience (PPE) in place of the case studies.
  • Making a presentation to a panel.
  • Having a panel interview.

(This is referred to as Program Pathway 2.)

“Internal audit experience or its equivalent” means experience in audit or assessment disciplines, including internal auditing, external auditing, quality assurance, compliance, and internal control.

“General management experience” means being in a position of responsibility for staff, planning, quality, budgets, or other resources.

“Audit Executive (AE) level role” describes a person in a senior position responsible for effectively managing the internal audit activity in accordance with the internal audit charter and the Definition of Internal Auditing, the Code of Ethics, and the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing (Standards). The AE or others reporting to the AE will have appropriate professional certifications and qualifications. The specific job title of the AE may vary across organizations. In some organizations, there may be more than one person who satisfies this definition, especially in large organizations where responsibilities may be delineated by division, department, geographical region, or similar segmentation.

Work Experience

A completed Experience Verification Form is required. Candidates must meet the work experience requirement before entering the program.

Experience Verification Form

Once you have completed the form, please access the Certification Document Upload Portal and upload your form(s) there. (Submit the document type as Professional Experience.)

Character Reference

Candidates must exhibit high moral and professional character and must submit a Character Reference Form signed by a CIA, CGAP, CCSA, CFSA, CRMA, or the candidate's supervisor.

Character Reference Form

Once you have completed the form, please access the Certification Document Upload Portal and upload your form(s) there. (Submit the document type as Character.)

Proof of Identification

Candidates must provide proof of identification in the form of a copy of the candidate’s official passport or national identity card (card must include a photo of the candidate). These must indicate current status; expired documents will not be accepted. All documents must be scanned and uploaded through the Document Upload Portal in a manner that ensures the photo is clearly legible.

How Do I Apply?

The QIAL Candidate Handbook, QIAL Syllabus, and other guides will direct you at every step.

Log in to the Certification Candidate Management System (CCMS) with an existing profile or create one as a first-time user, and select the QIAL application for Program Pathway 1 or Program Pathway 2.
